What can you say? I actually think the Huskers have a chance to cover.

To break it down in simple terms:

Nebraska Strength:: Ball Control Offense (BCO) hogging the time from the oppenents, effectively shortening the game.

Oklahoma Weakness: If there is a vulnerablity with OU, it’s their D. This allows a huge opportunity for the Huskers to keep off the field, and therefore, off the scoreboard.

Random links, stats and facts heading into tomorrow’s game against the .

* All four Baylor losses this season have come against teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches’ Poll at some point this season (Baylor Bears)

* Baylor is looks to snap an eight-game road losing streak in Big 12 games (Dallas Morning News)

* Nebraska ranks 118th in net punting with a measly 27.4 yards per punt. (NE State Paper)

* Back in 2001, Nebraska tallied 641 rushing yards against the Bears. No, that’s not a typo. They really ran for 641 yards. That total is the most rushing yards ever against a Baylor squad and the second-best rushing day in Nebraska history. The Huskers toted the ball 73 times that day, attempting just nine passes. (Baylor Bears)

* In six meetings as Big 12 foes, Nebraska has out-scored Baylor 277-69, scoring 48 or more points five times. However, the teams’ last meeting was much closer as the Huskers left Waco with a 23-14 victory in 2005. (Baylor Bears)

Now that I have your attention…

Well, of course anything could happen, but it’s not going to happen. We need to cheer on the huskers as they scrape together a few wins and get to a bowl. Any bowl. We’ve got to Scrape in ‘08.

It’s what Steve Sipple calls ‘tangible progress.’

But it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think the Huskers can be competitive in every game going forward.

If the Huskers can successfully execute the offense they’ve been running the past two games, they can realistically go 4-1 the rest of the way. That is also projecting that the Huskers will continue to make progress and add new wrinkles to the offense.

They also need to continue the progress they showed with cutting down on penalties.

On the flip side, if the defense doesn’t start producing big plays and the punting situation remains in flux, we could be in some serious trouble against OU. The past two games have had too many dropped picks, fumbles not recovered, and big plays given up. Basically, a shaky defense.

The good news is the D-line got a consistent pass-rush and was mostly stopping the Iowa State running game at the line of scrimmage.

Also, and the coaching staff deserve credit for adopting a game plan suited to the Huskers strength on offense. That has also guided Nebraska defense to improvement by simply keeping the defense off the field. Therefore, the “D” is playing better in shorter spurts, frustrating Iowa State with only two first half first downs.

Overall, you have to be somewhat satisfied as a Huskers fan. This isn’t going to be 2007. This season already has some positive vibes going. Granted, Missouri kicked our untested ass all over the field. But looking back, Missouri and made the Nebraska game their BCS Title game. They so wanted to break the streak and tarnish our players that they forgot to show up against Texas and OK State.

We consider ourselves flattered that you have ‘program inferiority complex.’ That Mizzou team should be competing for the national title but instead they’re in line for the Alamo Bowl.

Finally, the Huskers are stringing together good quarters of football, and slowly but surely, the positive Husker quarters are outweighing and outnumbering the negative Husker quarters. The feeling that the Huskers can compete in every game down the stretch run validates the decision to hire one .

I know, it’s tough not looking at the Top 25 and not seeing the Huskers. But I feel we are making good progress towards that goal.

Baylor Freshman QB is going to keep awake this weekend. While led the Hokies, to a victory, the Huskers will face an even tougher and more polished product in .

Let’s review the stats:

17 TD’s (9 Pass, 8 Rush)

  • Currently 22nd in the nation in passing efficiency.
  • Set the record, previously held by Mike Gundy, for most consecutive pass attempts without an interception to start a career (155 attempts and counting). And like Mike Gundy, he’s 18 so he is also a man.
  • Won the Big 12 400-meter hurdle in the spring and finished 3rd at the NCAA outdoor meet.

Impressive. No doubt.

Bo Pelini adds:

“They do a good job of protecting him,” Pelini said. “Their offense kinda sets up well for him. They throw a lot of short things, a lot of screens, a lot of quick rhythm stuff.”

Again, very impressive. When you play an underdog, the last type of QB you want to play is an effective dual-threat QB. But remember, Mr. Griffin racked up tons of yardage Washington State (easily the worst BCS team…ever) and netted 102 yards against Oklahoma rushing but with only 75 years passing.

Also, his two biggest passing days came against Northwestern State and Iowa State.

So beware of the hype with this guy and he is stoppable.

HG likes to use the word ‘test’ to describe the 2008 Huskers. This is the toughest ‘gimme’ game the Huskers will have, if that makes any sense.

HG Prediction: The Huskers are going to go bear hunting this week!
