Just think: the Big XII was one step away from drawing a name out of a hat
Filed Under Big 12 | Leave a Comment
Literally. We were only one step away from drawing a name out of a hat, in order to decide who should go to the Big XII Championship game. Instead, we have the less-than-satisfying alternative: computers deciding the outcome.
Official Dr. Pepper BIG XII Championship
TIEBREAKER RULES:
Divisional Champion: The (eligible) team with the best winning-percentage of all divisional members in its eight conference games is declared the divisional champion and representative to the Dr Pepper Big 12 Conference Football Championship Game. A team ineligible under NCAA or Big 12 rules for postseason (bowl) competition shall not compete in the Championship Game.
Divisional Tiebreakers: The following procedure will determine the representative from each division in the event of a tie:
- If two teams are tied, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative
- If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 7 will be followed until a determination is made. If only two teams remain tied after any step, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative.
- The records of the three teams will be compared against each other
- The records of the three teams will be compared within their division
- The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of fi nish (4, 5 and 6)
- The records of the three teams will be compared against all common conference opponents;
- The highest ranked team in the first Bowl Championship Series Poll following the completion of Big 12 regular season conference play shall be the representative
- The team with the best overall winning percentage [excluding exempted games] shall be the representative
- The representative will be chosen by draw.

Details on The Big 12’s unique partnership with the Gator Bowl
Filed Under bowl games | Leave a Comment
From The Big XII Website:
2008-09 Big 12 Bowl Agreements
The Big 12 has always assured its teams are able to participate in some of the top bowl games at the conclusion of each regular season. There will be no change in that situation for the league’s 13th year.
In addition to its membership in the Bowl Championship Series, the Big 12 will have agreements with seven other bowl games in place for 2008-09. Last season, the Big 12 had eight squads take part in postseason competition. Again this season, the Big 12 has eight bowl slots guaranteed. The Conference is partnered with nine bowls.
However the arrangement with the Gator Bowl is for it to select a Big 12 team twice over a four-year period. In the two years in which the Gator does not select a Big 12 team, the Sun Bowl will.
Following is the Big XII Bowl Selection order:
BCS
Cotton
Holiday
Gator (when it selects a Big 12 team)
Alamo
Sun (when the Gator does not take a Big 12 team)

Check out the recent fan comments in the Austin American-Statesman, regarding the hometown Texas Longhorns being jumped by Oklahoma in the BCS Standings a few minutes ago. Now Texas will watch two teams they beat by a combined score of 101 to 67 play for the Big XII title.
There’s some great give and take between the Texas and Oklahoma fans, who cordially refer to each other as the “Shorthorns” and “Chokelahoma”.

The Sagarin Ratings continue their embarrassment on the college football world.
The new rankings have Alabama number 6, while Texas Tech is number 5.
Someone please explain to me the rationale behind this ranking?
I guess going through the SEC meat-grinder of a schedule with an unblemished record means less than being exposed in blowout fashion by Oklahoma and barely beating an unranked Nebraska.
Even more amazing is the Sagarin Rankings have James Madision ranked 34th in the nation, sandwiched between Pitt and Kansas!
This is the same James Madison that lost to Duke 31-7 in their opener.
James Madison is coming off an impressive 38-35 victory against Wofford, while Pitt beat only beat West Virginia 19-15 and Kansas squeaked by Missouri 40-37.
Yes, I’m being sarcastic, but these rankings have no legitimacy!
It’s time for the Sagarin rankings to go.

Husker News and Notes: Gator Bowl bid may come before December 7th
Filed Under Big 12, Bo Pelini, Corn Feed, Huskers Football, Recruiting, Tom Osborne | Leave a Comment
Notes:
- Formally, bowl invitations go out on December 7th although the Gator Bowl may make Nebraska official before then:
“Rick Baker at the Cotton Bowl and Bruce Binkowski at the Holiday Bowl and I are good friends, and we formed this relationship that we have with the Big 12 and we talk a lot,” Catlett said. “If it appears that it’s going to break out and we can get to a decision between the three of us of who we wanted, then we could go ahead and move.”
- Great Headline: Bo Pelini is not happy until ‘we win them all.’
- Rumor has it that former Kansas commit Kevin Young, DE, has switched to the Huskers.
- It looks like Ted Gilmore isn’t going anywhere.
- Missouri’s loss to Kansas makes Nebraska co-champions of the Big 12 North.
- Tom Osborne on Bo Pelini: I think he’s done a great job this year.
- Was Henery’s kick the greatest of all Husker kicks?
- Potential recruit Jarvis Giles was blown away by his visit to Lincoln on Friday.
| More on the Huskers recruiting from Rivals:
Can Nebraska land running back Al-Terek McBurse? – Mike from Omaha, Neb.
This one is interesting because Al-Terek McBurse had a big senior season. McBurse, from Winter Springs (Fla.) High, averaged 12 yards per carry and rushed for more than 2,300 yards and 23 touchdowns in 10 games. In the season finale, McBurse rushed for 241 yards and three scores against Casselberry (Fla.) Lake Howell to break the Seminole County single-season rushing record, formerly held by Marquette Smith. McBurse’s productive season makes him one of the hottest running backs in the Sunshine State in a year loaded with some big-time running backs. Heading into the season, McBurse had just a few offers. But as the season progressed, the offers really started to come in. He has made one official visit, to Nebraska earlier this month. McBurse is scheduled to visit Purdue this weekend and Kansas the first weekend in December. Although McBurse won’t name a leader, he was impressed by his visit to Nebraska. He loved the offensive scheme, how they utilize the running backs and the coaching staff, especially coach Bo Pelini. If there is one team to keep an eye on, it’s Georgia Tech. McBurse always has liked the Yellow Jackets. Another possibility is USF. But right now it’s safe to say Nebraska has a great chance to pull McBurse out of Florida. The Huskers also are in the mix another Florida running back, Tampa Gaither’s Jarvis Giles. He had been a Tennessee commitment, but Phil Fulmer’s dismissal caused Giles to decommit. His commitment may come down to South Carolina, where he has had an official visit, and Nebraska. |
