- Husker Mike remembers the 1996 Fiesta Bowl.
- Austin Murphy thinks Bo Pelini’s honeymoon in Nebraska will be short:
11. I predict that Nebraska’s defense will be drastically improved — to the point where it achieves actual mediocrity. (It cannot help but be dramatically better than last year’s semi-permeable unit, which gave up, to various opponents, 49, 40, 41, 45, 36, 76, 31 and 65 points.)
12. I predict that Bo Pelini’s honeymoon in Lincoln, and the good will generated by his savvy vow to revive the Big Red’s once-potent walk-on program, will last for up to seven weeks, at which point the ‘Huskers will have lost three straight, and be staring down the barrel of a second-straight losing season.
- More Bruce Feldman Madness: Ranks conferences based on QB Depth and the Big 12 is first. The best in conference? Colt McCoy. And somehow the Big 10 has better QB’s than the SEC.
Big 12: This is a clear top choice thanks to a lot of heady leaders who make smart decisions and have proven to be very accurate with the ball. The league has four guys with legit Heisman hopes in Chase Daniel, Sam Bradford, Graham Harrell and Colt McCoy. A fifth, Todd Reesing of Kansas, is as tough and as sharp as they come, although I expect KU to backslide some this year. Behind those five is plenty more talent that probably could merit all-conference consideration in any other league save for the SEC. In fact, 10 of the league’s top 11 passers return. Depth-wise, this is better than it’s ever been for the Big 12.

Corn Feed: Sporting News has Nebraska ranked 40th

Just your Nebraska preview along with a perspective piece on the Huskers past and present of Huskers Football.
- Duh : RealFootball365 says Nebraska might of been the team of the 90’s in college football .
- Also, Orson Swindle puts Bo Pelini on his watch list…for coaches likely to have a Mike Gundy-like implosion :
Bo Pelini, Nebraska: Running a reclamation job on Nebraska will test the patience of any man, but most especially someone who oversaw their once-proud defense at its finest. A good comparison? Letting a friend borrow your car for two weeks and discovering he spilled coffee all over the dash, replaced your high-performance gas with rotgut regular grade and ripped the bumper off on the corner of the house. He deserves at least one big fit in year one.
And no, we aren’t going to show.
I said no, we aren’t going to show it.
Of course we are going to show it!
Another reason to cut back on gas- you might be funding terrorists and Oklahoma State Football program via T. Boone Pickens.

- Corn Nation asks: What is the proper response for the tired ‘what does the ‘N’ on Nebraska’s helmets stand for‘ joke?

- Must read: Football 365 interview with Dr Tom Osborne:
Q:What would you consider to be the lowest point in your career?
OSBORNE: Maybe the Lawrence (Phillips) situation, because we took a lot of pride in doing things the right way here. The NCAA rules of graduation, our players, being consistent in terms of how we enforce discipline. Obviously what Lawrence did was not right, and yet we were labeled as win-at-all-costs, that type of thing. Yet we just disciplined Lawrence in accordance with our discipline policy and code and we thought we did it fairly. So it was a difficult time because we had a great team in 1995, we had great players, undefeated and nobody came close to us that whole year. (It was) painful.
Q: What was the No. 1 thing that separated Pelini from the rest of the coaching candidates during the interview process? What did he have the other candidates didn’t seem to have?OSBORNE: We needed a lot of help on defense, and I didn’t know of anybody that had better defensive coaching credentials. The other thing he had going for him is [that] he had coached here in 2003 for one year, and had turned our defense around in that year into one of the top defenses in the country from a rather average defense in 2002. So I knew that he understood and could motivate players and communicate with players and (get them) to play with intensity and passion. The other thing that was in Bo’s favor was I was able to talk to a lot of players who played for him in 2003 and a lot of assistant coaches who worked with him on defense. And in his last month, he was named interim coach when (Frank) Solich was fired, so Bo coached the bowl game for about five weeks, [and] he acted as the head coach. All of the comments I got from the former players and former coaches, all of whom I knew well and trusted, were very positive. So I was able to get more information on him. In most other people, you would get information on simply by interviewing them. So that was the main decision on Bo.
- College Football News looks at must-win games for the Big 12 North Teams. Nebraska’s outlook:
Nebraska
Big Win: Virginia Tech
Must Win: Kansas StateLast year’s team could score on anybody and be scored on by anybody. In the last three games of the season, a total of 335 points were scored. Thus, enter in Sir Bo Pellini. Tom Osborne’s last hand-picked successor didn’t quite pan out the Husker-faithful had hoped. Lincoln eagerly waits for the revival of the conventional defensive ‘blackshirt’ mentality that is brought to the table by the former LSU defensive coordinator.
Virginia Tech comes into Memorial Stadium for a non-conference game that should prove to be explosive, if anything. The performance will be indicative of the outlook for the rest of the season as the new look defense will take on a solid, but not especially overwhelming Hokie squad. Winning this game would be a big step towards overhauling the team and bringing some relief to the Big Red Nation.
The Huskers will have some competition from unlikely places, and Kansas State is a program that’s not about to willingly backtrack in the North. Ron Prince added a bevy of junior college talent that should shore up defensive issues. Although Nebraska won last year’s game by 42 points, losing to this team on the round would be a serious setback.
- Spencer Hall assess for damaged college football properties (including Nebraska) and their chances for them to be ‘flipped.’ Final assessment:
- 7 Huskers will be inducted in the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame.
Perhaps less than a year from move-in: The Huskers could be, with some touch-ups, looking ready for market by the end of the season. Big qualifying if: IF the defense gets its majestic malevolence back, something Pelini happens to specialize in…

Why I’m excited about the 2008 Huskers
Filed Under Uncategorized | 1 Comment
Bo Pelini. For the first time since Osborne, HG believes Nebraska football has a great chance to start making a name for itself on the national football scene.
It’s been a while. I’m starving for a big Huskers “W” that I can be proud of. And let’s be honest, in college football and particularly at a place like Nebraska, wins are correlated with the head coach.
And in coaching, it’s either you got it or you don’t.
As much as Frank Solich’s firing is now viewed as an injustice along the same lines as the lack of response by FEMA doing a good job during Hurricane Katrina, he was never given enough time to correct his mistakes and make a recovery. Therefore, the viewpoint around Solich is ‘he doesn’t have it.’
You’re doing a heck-of-a job, Pedy.
But let’s look at the case against Solich: coaches with Solich’s resume do not end up, and content at, places like the fine University of Ohio if they aren’t a product of the system. Or lacks charisma or is a great recruiter. Even with the ill-fated DUI. Oh wait, that’s right, he was dated-raped.
Come on, sing it:
“If it wasn’t for date-rape, Solich would never get laid.”
Solich was a fine man (football-wise) and a loyal assistant to the genius of Tom Osborne. He took over a well-oiled machine to some significant wins and continued national prominence.
Although, when we started getting further into his tenure, when ‘his’ players who ‘he’ recruited came in, we didn’t see the same level of talent or competitiveness.
You can blame partial qualifiers and rule changes, but the bottom line is they weren’t attracting top talent and/or developing talent.
And, as you well know, the wheels of Nebraska came off long before Callahan arrived. It happened in 2002. That’s when the Huskers looked very beatable, in almost every game.
7-7.
Ouch!
The End of an Era.
(Yes, 2003 we had a little redemption. And yes, Solich should of kept his job. But how we remember and how it actually happened are two different things. A lot of people have wanted to run Solich out of town and we got our wish. And then every available coach said “Eff You” to the Huskers job.)
And the beginning of a new Error.
But, then our He arrived on campus on December 4th. And for the first time since Osborne, I think the Huskers are going to have a first rate coach. An effective and aggressive defensive coach who will be heavily involved in the defense while giving Shawn Watson wide latitude on play calling and offensive coach.
Also, does anyone reading this post not think that Bo Pelini has great football IQ?
What’s football IQ? When to call time-outs, time management, play calling timing, trick plays, focus on special teams, ect.
I think we should start getting pumped on the Huskers in a very macro way. Let’s not only think about the progress we are going to make this season, let’s also remember that, for the first time in a decade, Nebraska is going to a media friendly, charismatic, motivating, give a great half-time speech, and innovative coach.
(Ok, maybe not innovative, but he has a better capacity to adapt to different conditions. The Bo Pelini gene will make it through the next wave of evolution, while the Bill Callahan gene most likely will become come extinct, along with people who use ThunderSticks and have their bluetooth earpiece in while they are eating dinner with their family at AppleBee’s.)
If Bo Pelini works out, we have him for the long-haul. I think Bo and Nebraska are a great fit. If Bo succeeds and other schools came calling, I don’t think we have to worry because we are, at our best, a top coaching job in the country.
If we suck, we’re screwed.
Now, if Bo takes the Green Bay Packers job in 2020, I’m not really going to upset. I’m sure Bo would want to add a Super Bowl ring to his multiple National Titles he won at Nebraska.
He’s ambitious and he’s got a chip on his shoulder. HG loves that.
