We are a little late on this story because of we didn’t want to interrupt the “Post- Glow” that is permeating around fans and community of Nebraska Cornhuskers Football fans.

But with Nebraska’s recent success, the anger from The Callahan Error of Nebraska Cornhuskers Football is fading.

In fact, you have to give Callahan some credit for the 2008 Nebraska Cornhuskers offense, with full acknowledgment that Callahan would of had this team at 5-7 and saying “Cossy, you’re doing a heck-of-a-job.”

But what it is most surprising is the Jets interviewed Bill Callahan after firing Eric Mangini

Can we call this the worst start to any coaching search?

This is more suprising given that the Jets even recognized ’s anti-midas touch and gave him media training before the season.

Anyway, we wish nothing but the best for Billy C.

From what we heard, he got great reviews coaching the O-Line.

Today is Black Monday in the NFL.

Today is the day when the ultimate Darwin job, NFL Head Coach, sheds the weak and gives others a chance to become the few, the proud, the proven NFL coach.

is an example of the weak. His players didn’t respect him and his peers don’t respect him. He might have a hard time finding another job after his horrible performance this year, on top of violating the man code by calling out his former employer and creating the SpyGate faisco.

He might never work in the NFL again.

He did hire one Bill Callahan over the off-season to help out with the offensive-line and according to JetsInsider, Callahan ought to be retained:

It’s unclear who the new Jets coach is going to be, but whoever it is, clearly needs to keep Bill Callahan as his offensive line boss. He did a brilliant job in 2008.
Several offensive linemen lobbied with the media on Monday for Callahan to be retained.Against Miami, Jets left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson gave up no sacks and just one tackle to All-Pro linebacker Joey Porter who has been on fire.

If that doesn’t point to the Callahan’s significant talents, nothing will. Ferguson took a quantum leap under Callahan in 2008 and should have been the Pro Bowl starter at LT in the AFC instead of Buffalo’s Jason Peters.

We are happy to see that Bill Callahan has finally found his niche. Say what you want about his Nebraska tenure, somewhere within Callahan is a competent offensive mind.

Part Two of the interview:

Relationship with Callahan:  Steve is a brave man for admitting that he advocated, prior to the 2007 season, an extension for . He describes Callahan as ‘very professional’ in his media dealings and Steve says he always had a good rapport with Callahan, that is, until he called for his resignation.

After that, he described his relationship with Callahan as ‘chilly’.

Does Callahan Get Credit for the Offensive Success?:  Steve is impressed with Callahan’s offensive acumen but points out that at the end of the day, it’s all about W’s and L’s. He also points out that Callahan’s offense struggled last season so it’s dangerous to ‘oversell’ Callahan’s offensive mind as a factor to the 2008 Huskers success.

The Day the Music Died:  Sip said the 2007 game was ‘the day the music died’. Not only did the Huskers have one of their worst performances ever, Steve covered the game with a headache that was unrelated the game.

Nebraska-Florida:  Steve covered the for the Journal Star and in the days leading up to the game, Sip was struck with how small the Florida D-Line and Linebackers were; the pure physical advantage the Huskers held over the Florida players was staggering, and he could foresee trouble coming for the Gators. He also likened physical appearance to a ‘horse.’

Highlights of Career: Besides the championship teams, the 2001 Oklahoma game was an all-time highlight. He really thought Frank Solich had turned the corner with the program after that game. He also remembers how strong the 1999 team finished.

Turmoil:  The Frank Solich firing and the ensuing Callahan regime gave him a sober outlook and some perspective. He now appreciates how good the 90’s Nebraska teams were and says ‘I don’t think we will take it for granted when success comes around again.’

Another low point was the 2007 USC game. Steve says from a confidence standpoint and a physical standpoint, the Huskers never recovered from that game, although we didn’t know it at the time.

Personal:  Steve started off at the Journal Star as a copy editor in 1991. He covered everything from bowling to volleyball to high school sports before settling on the Huskers beat in 1995 (not a bad year to start).

A native of Columbus, NE, he knew he wanted to write since the first grade.

News and Notes:

The Huskers were 12th nationally in total offense, 18th in scoring offense and second in time of possession. After a rocky start with the running game, Nebraska finished 37th, gaining over 300 ground yards twice in Big 12 play. Fifteenth in third down conversion percentage, 14th in passing efficiency, 13th in total first downs. All this while juggling three running backs, working with a new staff and integrating elements of the spread offense into a classic, tight-end-driven version of the West Coast Offense.

On another front, Watson was asked if he’s spoken at all recently with former Husker head coach Bill Callahan, now the offensive line coach for the New York Jets.

“Have not, not since the season’s been on. We’ve not,” Watson said. “He’s obviously busy. That’s a different deal. And I’ve been really, really busy. I don’t get a chance to talk to my wife much.”

Does he think Callahan would be pleased with what this offense has done this season?

“I think he would be. I obviously learned a lot of this from him, so he gets a lot of credit. That’s just what it is. We’ve put our spin on it. Yeah, we have. My personality in the playcalling? Yes,” Watson said. “But again, the soundness and some of the things that we do that I think could give us an edge come from what I’ve learned from him. So I’d be remiss, I’d be wrong, if I didn’t say that.”

With Green graduating from high school in December, all four quarterbacks are expected to be on campus for the spring semester, ready to take part in conditioning and then spring ball.

  • The preparation for the Gator Bowl begins and the Huskers have the ‘hunger’:

“We’re fresh,” Watson said. “That’s kinda what’s nice right now. Everybody’s fresh and our sharpness is there.  The guys have wanted to be here, so their attention is with us. They’re hungry to play again…it’s not been hard at all to keep their attention and their focus because it’s what they wanted.”

Said sophomore running back Quentin Castille: “I feel a hunger in everybody. The coaches, the players. Even though we’re in half pads, we just want to go out there and dominate.”

Will have a round-up of the interview later today…

In case you live under a rock, Steve’s work is a must-read for all Huskers fans, including the HuskersGameday team (actually, team also means ‘both of us’) . Rarely does a day go by that we don’t link to Sipple’s work. If you want the current temperature of the the Husker program, Sipple is a good place to start.

If you are a Huskers fan, you’ll definitely want to hear what Sipple has to say regarding in ‘95, The Callahan Error, the Bo Pelini-Tom Osborne relationship, potential movement on the coaching staff, Nebraska’s recruiting strategy, and an early look at the 2009 Huskers.

Husker News and Notes:

  • A Gator Bowl invite is all but official. The Huskers will face either or Florida State.
  • Our old friend Bill Callahan might end up on Lane Kiffin’s Tennessee staff. Bill Callahan (No people skills X Marginal Football Management Skills + Huge Ego + NY Times Reader / Slightly Above Average Offensive Mind) + Deep South (Oklahoma Hillbillies - Nickelback + Toby Keith) = Disaster
  • Huskers another commitment for the : JC WR Brandon Kinnie:

Hometown: Rayville, LA
JC: Fort Scott Community College (KS)
Class: RS - Freshman
6′5″
218 lbs.
40 time: 4.37 (Scout)
Visit Date: 9/5/2008
Scholarships offered: Nebraska, Arkansas
Rankings/Stars: ***
Rivals: 5.7

Ted Gilmore was the lead recruiter on Kinnie:

“It helped my stock a lot with recruiting,” Kinnie said of his size. “A lot of teams want big wideouts now to line up against a little corner, that’s very intimidating.”

Kinnie plans to graduate in May and will have three years to play upon arrival to Lincoln.

He also had offers from Arkansas and Kansas.

“It’s very exciting just to know you’re going to a town that loves football. That’s the only thing there, the main attraction. I can’t wait to get there and show what I can do.”

Kinnie really bonded with Gilmore, who he talked often to during the process.

“The coaches were genuine with me,” Kinnie said.

From Omaha World-Herald:

In 2004, Billy C  reneged All-Big 12 Kansas linebacker Joe Mortensen scholarship offer ON SIGNING DAY:

After being named the camp’s most valuable player, then-coach offered a scholarship, and Mortensen said he accepted. Solich was fired at the end of the 2003 regular season, but Mortensen said he was led to believe his offer was still valid.

Then came a phone call on national letter of intent day.

“They dropped me for some running back who I guess had de-committed from somewhere else,” Mortensen said.

Who called?
“Since it was a whole new staff, I don’t even remember the name,” Mortensen said. “He just said, ‘Sorry, we’re going a different way.’

In his mailbag, Stewart has a great retort:

In your list of program-changing losses, how could you forget the game that sent the most dominating program of the 1990s spinning down the toilet? Nebraska’s undefeated 2001 regular season culminated in a 62-36 whupping by Colorado, followed by another blowout in the national championship game by Miami, and you know the rest of the story … totally destroyed one of the greatest dynasties in college football history.
–Bret, Omaha, Neb.

I agree to an extent, but let’s not kid ourselves. The Huskers rebounded to post a 10-win season just two years later.

Colorado and Miami did not destroy the Nebraska dynasty. Bill Callahan destroyed the Nebraska dynasty.

Bravo!

As you may have already heard, Husker Fan James W. Conradt, 36 and living in Austin, TX, lifted the template from newsok.com and created a phony story saying Sam Bradford and were arrested for cocaine. (He’s actually a well-known poster in Husker circles. He is known as Darth Husker.)

Actual photo of James W. Conradt. This is actually the closest he has gotten to a pussy since 2003.

This is a head scratcher for many reasons. Why a 36-year old in Austin, TX would devote any mental energy to bringing down a bunch of kids on bogus charges is beyond belief. It’s not like we are talking about public figures who are fair game for parody. There is no parody or sense of humor in this. It just seems kind of sick.

Anyway, father is looking to take legal action against James Conradt. While I can’t understand what he is going through, HG feels there has to be a better remedy.

Here are some suggestions for punishment:

  • Banned from watching or attending Nebraska games for two years.
  • Only piece of Nebraska apparel allowed is Bo Pelini’s chewing gum or Bill Callahan’s black Nebraska jacket.

BC on Black: Because red isn’t sophisticated enough

  • Forced to provide transcripts for every Bill Callahan press conference in 2004 and 2007 (Our answer for writing “I will not embarrass myself or Husker Nation like this again” on the chalkboard 200 times).
  • 2008 Baylor Seasons Tickets.
  • Manually harvest two acres of corn.

Anymore ideas?

UPDATE: We found DarthHusker’s MySpace page.  Last log-in: 10.16/06. Friends: 1 and that would be Tom (Dude! Even Tina Tequila won’t turn you down!). Status (drumroll) Single.

  • Father of Oklahoma player Landry Jones , who was falsely accused, along with of being arrested on drug charges on an internet posting by a Huskers fan, is looking into legal options.

James W. Conradt, a Nebraska football fan living in Austin, Texas, said he did not mean to hurt Oklahoma quarterbacks and Landry Jones with his Internet hoax, according to a story posted on The Oklahomans’ website late Wednesday.

“I want to express my deepest apologies to the families,” Conradt said Wednesday night after his story was reported as fact by at least two Texas radio stations. “That’s the thing I’m regretful about. I didn’t want to hurt anyone.”

Landry’s father, Kevin Jones, indicated Conradt’s apology may not be enough.

“I’m going to prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law,” Jones said. “I’ve got deep enough pockets to do it.”

“My commitment is solid,” said Green. “I took my time to make this decision and now having made it, that’s it. I’m going to Nebraska.”

  • BigRedNetwork asks: Have you peaked as a Huskers Fan? HG answer: Yes, in 1997-98 season. But those memories have faded and have been replaced with Solich/Callahan memories. So it’s time to rebuild and peak again.
