Great stat digging by the Journal-Star’s Brian Christopherson:
5. Castille. He showed we shouldn’t go into this offseason forgetting about him. It is interesting to note, however, that aside from the runs of 58 and 40 yards, Castille had 16 carries for 27 yards. The sledding was mostly tough for the Husker run game yesterday.
About Suh and Steinkuhler, Carl Pelini said this: “It was one of the best games two interior tackles have had in my career.”
Perhaps the most telling stat of this season compared to last: In the last four games, Nebraska has 19 sacks (35 for the season). Last year in 12 games, Nebraska had 13. That’s pretty amazing when you think about it.
The Blackshirts are back!

Some Thoughts on the Huskers Gator Bowl Victory…
Filed Under Alex Henery, Bo Pelini, Joe Ganz, Ndamukong Suh, Shawn Watson | 1 Comment
Joe Ganz : I thought he was a goner about 3 times during the game. I was stupid enough to think that Ganz would come off the Gator Bowl field in his final (?) football game. What a fool I am.
Limping around, taking helmet-adjusting hits, sporting the ‘dazed look’… all of that didn’t matter. Ganz was money all day long. The guy gets knocked down and he comes back and gives it to you twice as hard.
Nebraska never gave up, never got discouraged, never lost confidence in their game plan.
Quentin Castille was a pleasant surprise and gives the Huskers an indication that changes will have to be made offensively. The Huskers may go to a Two RB system next year . With inexperience at the QB and with the Receiving Corps, we may see an emphasis on the running game over the passing game in ‘09.
And, for the first time all year, Bo Pelini’s Defense out-shined Shawn Watson’s Offense .
Make no mistake about it- this is the game that we will point to as the day the Blackshirts Returned. I’m not talking about actual jersey’s, I’m talking about attitude.
Just imagine when we start intercepting passes. Just wait until that talent develops or gets brought in. The Husker Defensive Line was putting consistent pressure on Clemson’s QB all game.
One thing I didn’t like : Mr. Shawn Watson’s call on Patrick Witt’s first and only play of the game.
Patrick has not had one important snap his entire college career, yet he had the enormous challenge of converting a 3rd and long deep in Husker territory against a physical Clemson Defense.
The play resulted in Witt scrambling and fumbling.
Yes, it was third down, but it was of more importance to protect the football and give it to Castille. Yes, you wouldn’t have converted the third down, but you can’t throw Patrick Witt in that position, freezing cold off the bench.
And another thing I didn’t like: Red Zone Troubles . The Huskers could have put this game away by getting sixes instead of settling for threes.
We like Alex Henery. No doubt.
But we’d just like to see him when he has to make heroic kicks at plus-45-yard range.
The Nebraska Red Zone Offense is going to have to be re-evaluated in the off-season.
More Gripes: Shawn Watson (I know, I’ve been tough on him this game) called a Speed Option two plays after Ganz came up limping. That play ended up giving Clemson their first Touchdown on a fumble.
I don’t think the two are connected, but I couldn’t help but wonder ‘what was Shawn thinking ‘?
I wish I counted the number of times Watson gave it to Castille right after Castille had a big run. I thought he was setting up a big play-action pass, but that never came. If you’re going to commit to predictable play-calling after a nice run and bait them, you might as well cash in big.
Did Quentin Castille today get an early jump on the ‘touches competition’ against Roy Helu in 2009?
I think so.
Roy is good but was ineffective against the physical Clemson defense and he might end up being Robin to Castille’s Batman.

GO BIG RED!
A fantastic effort by the Cornhuskers today, with the Blackshirts holding Kansas State to just 247 total yards and QB Joe Ganz breaking a number of single game and season records.
More in-depth analysis is coming in the next 24 hours. In the meantime, let’s check out some stats that really jumped out at us.
Blackshirts are Back, big time:
- The Nebraska defense registed four sacks for 49 yards in today’s game, pushing its season total to 25 sacks. Nebraska finished the 2007 season with 13 total sacks.
- The Huskers have produced nine sacks in the past two games, totaling 91 yards lost.
- Kansas State managed only two offensive touchdowns, as the other 14 points came courtesy of defensive and special teams touchdowns.
Cornhusker Offense - Clicking On All Cylinders:
- Nebraska ran for 340 yards on 53 carries in today’s game, NU’s highest rushing total of the season.
- Nebraska’s 340 rushing yards were its most in a Big 12 game since posting 352 yards against Kansas in 2002.
- Joe Ganz’s 16 completions today give him 247 pass completions in 2008, good for a new Nebraska record. Zac Taylor held the previous record of 237 competions in 2005.
- The 95 rushing yards for Ganz are the most by a Nebraska quarterback since Jammal Lord ran for 109 yards against Texas A&M in 2003.
- Ganz moved past Eric Crouch (4,481) into No. 4 on the career passing list with 4,660 career yards.
Post-game Quote from Bo Pelini, on Nebraska going into a bye week and thought process of remainder of season…
“I think our guys know what is in front of us. I would like to play straight through, but it does not work out that way. I think it comes at a good time for us because we are nicked up a bit and we could use a couple of days off. This will give us a little extra preparation time and can give us a good jump on recruiting heading into the summer.”
Nebraska now moves to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in the Big XII conference, which translates into second place in the Big 12 North standings.

Stat line:Ndamukong Suh’s amazing performance against Kansas…
Filed Under Defense, Huskers Football, Ndamukong Suh | Leave a Comment
From Tim Griffin’s Helmet Stickers:
Nebraska DT/FB Ndamukong Suh — He might have produced the most unique statistical game in Big 12 history. Suh notched 12 tackles, including four for losses involving 2.5 sacks and a quarterback hurry to pace Nebraska’s 45-35 victory over Kansas. And for good measure, also snagged a 2-yard TD reception — his first career catch — to help boost the Cornhuskers’ fourth-quarter rally past the Jayhawks.

Bo Pelini has already cast his “No” vote in HG poll: After a 3-0 start, should the Huskers D get their Blackshirts?
“Oh, maybe some time,” Pelini said in response to a question about when Nebraska’s defenders might earn the traditional Blackshirt practice jerseys. “I’m not sure when. To be honest with you, that’s the furthest thing from my mind right now, but time will tell.”
HG loves it. No disrespect to our first 3 opponents but this team needs is ready for a real test against a great football program like Virginia Tech. That will be the first true measuring stick of what we can expect from the Huskers in 2008 and will give a glimpse if we can expect something more than the Insight Bowl.
To participate in the Blackshirt poll, just look to your left and cast your vote.

While live-blogging the New Mexico State game, Huskers Gameday wondered if a defensive shut-out would bust the Blackshirts out of storage.
Turns out that Coach Pelini was asked about the shirts in his post-game session.
More Blackshirt details from the Lincoln Journal Star:
Tags: Blackshirts, Virginia TechIf the coveted Blackshirts are finally awarded before Nebraska’s next game against Virginia Tech — and Pelini indicated that’s very possible — then Saturday’s third quarter just might be a reason why.
“I thought we came of age a little bit there,” he said. “We had a great pass rush, we had them covered down and just kept moving them backward. And they kept getting chance after chance, and we kept coming.”

Mike McNeil tacks on another Cornhuskers TD, Nebraska 35-0
Filed Under Bo Pelini, Live Blogging Games, New Mexico State | Leave a Comment
Mike McNeil cartwheels into the end zone for an acrobatic touchdown and, after the officials review the tape, gives the Huskers a 35 to 0 lead with a 35 yard touchdown reception.
A tremendous improvement over the first two games… let’s see if the defense can hold on for the shut-out.
