The Cornhuskers recruiting fortunes have taken a dramatic turn for the better in the past couple of days and that’s continued with the signing of , a 6′4 250 DE from Maryland (when was the last time the Huskers had a player from Maryland?).

He is rated a 4-star DE and 26th overall DE in the ratings.

He choose the Huskers over Maryland, Michigan, and Penn State.

No confirmation to the rumor of Dan Hawkins crapping his pants in Boulder tonight.

may have just gotten his biggest recruiting score yet.

Exit Question to Husker Nation:

Does this raise the stakes for the ? If the Huskers come out and lay an egg, will these solid verbals look around or does Bo have them truly sold on the Husker program?

Dan Hawkins is talking out of his ass again. This time he is predicting’10 wins and no excuses’ from the Buffalo’s in 2009.

At the team’s annual seniors awards banquet Sunday at a hotel in Broomfield, Hawkins’ closing remarks included this forecast for 2009: “10 wins and no excuses.”

College Football News with some choice analysis and commentary on the Nebraska Cornhuskers 40-31 victory over the Buffaloes:

“As nightfall covered Lincoln’s Memorial Stadium, the outlook grew particularly dark for the Huskers when CU’s freshman safety, Patrick Mahnke, made a play far beyond his years to sack Nebraska quarterback for a 15-yard loss to the Buffaloes’ 40. For most teams, that loss is a death blow, given that a 57-yard field goal is beyond realistic.

But for Henery, the thin-limbed and wiry player who looks the part of a kicker, there was a lot of dynamite in a right leg that—unable to kick in the second quarter—gathered up strength following a timeout, and made the most of the chance his coach gave him.

Instead of going for the first down on a fourth-and-25 play, Pelini sent Henery onto the field, on the upper part of the big red “N” that serves as Memorial Stadium’s midfield logo.

The daunting distance offered literally long odds to a Nebraska team that, already assured of second place in the Big 12 North, wanted to finish its regular season with a winning record (5-3) in Big 12 competition. One year after beating Nebraska to attain a 6-6 record and bowl eligibility, Colorado and coach were oh-so-close to replicating that very same series of events.

This year, however, there would be no bowl in Boulder. Henery’s kick, which started out to the right, drifted inside the right upright and then cleared the crossbar by two to three yards. The joint jumped in jubilation, and after grabbing that 33-31 lead thanks to Henery’s heroics, a late pick-six snuffed out Colorado’s hopes of answering with a field goal of its own.

’s rebuilding project gained very satisfactory remarks for its first year in Lincoln, while the beaten Buffaloes are left to wonder what might have been, after coming up short today, and in other Big 12 battles against the likes of Texas A&M and Kansas. Alex Henery’s fabulous field goal gave the term “finishing kick” a whole new meaning in America’s heartland.

More Postgame Thoughts:

“It might not have been a pretty win over Colorado with a few big mistakes and drive after drive that stalled, but the Huskers were able to come through late and, of course, there was Alex Henery to save the day. His 57-yard field goal will go down in Nebraska lore, and then the defense came up with the big play to put the game away.

closed out his Nebraska regular season career with a nice day, but he had to take too many sacks. Offensively, this was Roy Helu’s day as he led the team in both rushing and receiving, grinding out five-yard run after five-yard run.”

Mark Kiszla pulls no punches in this recent Denver Post article on the Cornhuskers’ next opponent: the Colorado Buffaloes, led by third year coach .

Kiszla provides some good perspective on where the Colorado football program currently sits, nearly three full years into “The Hawkins Era”.

  • A victory against Nebraska would even CU’s record at 6-6 and send the Buffaloes to a bowl game that beats sitting at home alone for the holidays.
  • With nearly 3 years at Colorado in the books, ’ record against winning teams is now 4-17.
  • Las month. at a time when his career record at Colorado was 11-19, Hawkins was given a two-year contract extension.
  • The Colorado offense is the most inept in the Big 12 Conference, having scored more than 20 points only one time in seven league games.

The Nebraska “brand” has lost enough luster in the past six seasons that the Big 12’s TV partners (ABC, ESPN, Fox Sports Net and Versus) are unwilling to overlook a pillowy soft opponent on a given week. What’s more, improved balance in the Big 12 has given the TV folks plenty of other intriguing options.

if incoming freshman Darrell Scott — the nation’s top-rated running back recruit last winter — lives up to the hype, he will give Hawkins exactly the type of elite skill player he’s been missing…coach finally feels confident enough in his personnel to go to a no-huddle offense…we may start to see more of the unconventional plays that marked his tenure at Boise State. The bigger question may be the defense, which absolutely tanked at the end of last season and lost its most important player, All-America LB Jordon Dizon’

“This is Big 12 Football”

  • Everday Should Be Saturday takes on Dan Hawkins and his very shady RV trip around . Key quote from Hawkins:

The thing I identify with, particularly when you get into more of a removed situation, is trying to get out of the box — how do you get out of the box? How do you do what those people do outside of your world? How do you become a doctor? How do you become an astronaut — what’s that all about?
