takes a look back at a crazy December ‘07:

“I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I knew from the first time here it’d be a little bit crazy,” Pelini said. “Then I found out that night we (the Tigers) were going to the national championship game and all that was going to entail. It was crazy.”

Husker senior offensive lineman remembers Pelini “looked like he was ready to jump out of his skin” when he met with the team.

“He had so much bottled-up energy, he was just like shaking and bouncing around,” Slauson said. “And at a player meeting with him the first day, you could just feel the energy flowing out of him.”

A week before, Pelini interviewed in a small building at the airport in Baton Rouge, La., while a rainstorm raged outside.

Athletic director Tom Osborne was struck by how “authentic” Pelini was. Even then, Pelini knew who he wanted to hire as his assistants.

Ron Brown has some words of praise for Turner Gill.

Extra practices mean the 2009 QB competition starts now.

senses momentum on the recruiting trail:

“I think we have some momentum and the people out there recognize what we’ve done and where we’re headed,” Pelini said. “We’re getting a very good response from the kids, their parents, all the way down to the high school coaches.

on being the lead recruiter:

Pelini was asked Saturday about being the “closer” on recruits for the first time. He said he already was part of that at LSU with defensive recruits.

“I didn’t have an area at LSU,” Pelini said. “I was going around and seeing the defensive guys a lot. I’m used to doing that. I’ve been going into homes for a long time. I believe it’s one of my strengths.”

Callahan opened practices to Texas high school coaches two years ago when the Huskers played in the Cotton Bowl. Pelini said Florida coaches will be welcome when NU is in Jacksonville.

“We have an open-door policy anyway to the coaches,” he said. “We did that at LSU. You can only do it so much, though. You can’t do it to the point where it’s a distraction. But we encourage coaches to come to our practice.”

And on who they are targeting:

Those “guys” including running backs of Plano, Texas and of Tampa, Fla., and defensive tackle Latu Heimuli of Salt Lake City, among others. Pelini talked to all of them this week in that traditional “closer” head coach role.

Exit Question: Did the Huskers get snubbed on the team?

HG thought Suh was a lock for the first-team and Alex Henery should of been better than honorable mention.

What do you think?

Notes:

  • Formally, bowl invitations go out on December 7th although the Gator Bowl may make Nebraska official before then:

“Rick Baker at the Cotton Bowl and Bruce Binkowski at the Holiday Bowl and I are good friends, and we formed this relationship that we have with the Big 12 and we talk a lot,” Catlett said. “If it appears that it’s going to break out and we can get to a decision between the three of us of who we wanted, then we could go ahead and move.”

Can Nebraska land running back Al-Terek McBurse?

– Mike from Omaha, Neb.
—–

is looking to land a back from the Sunshine State.

This one is interesting because had a big senior season. McBurse, from Winter Springs (Fla.) High, averaged 12 yards per carry and rushed for more than 2,300 yards and 23 touchdowns in 10 games. In the season finale, McBurse rushed for 241 yards and three scores against Casselberry (Fla.) Lake Howell to break the Seminole County single-season rushing record, formerly held by Marquette Smith.

McBurse’s productive season makes him one of the hottest running backs in the Sunshine State in a year loaded with some big-time running backs. Heading into the season, McBurse had just a few offers. But as the season progressed, the offers really started to come in. He has made one official visit, to Nebraska earlier this month. McBurse is scheduled to visit Purdue this weekend and Kansas the first weekend in December.

Although McBurse won’t name a leader, he was impressed by his visit to Nebraska. He loved the offensive scheme, how they utilize the running backs and the coaching staff, especially coach Bo Pelini.

If there is one team to keep an eye on, it’s Georgia Tech. McBurse always has liked the Yellow Jackets. Another possibility is USF. But right now it’s safe to say Nebraska has a great chance to pull McBurse out of Florida.

The Huskers also are in the mix another Florida running back, Tampa Gaither’s Jarvis Giles. He had been a Tennessee commitment, but Phil Fulmer’s dismissal caused Giles to decommit. His commitment may come down to , where he has had an official visit, and Nebraska.
