Here’s another Classic Cornhuskers cover and legendary ass whompin’ tale for all the youngins. The cover you’ll find below is of Heisman Trophy Winner Mike Rozier, rolling down field during the Huskers hallmark stompin’ of in the 1983 Inaugural Kickoff Classic.

That’s right kids. Hallmark. This was a hallmark match-up in two ways. First of all, this game was the first Kickoff Classic ever held. It took place on August 29, 1983 to be exact. Even more impressively, this game between the Cornhuskers and Nittany Lions, “was the first regular-season college football game EVER to be played in the month of August.” In the history of the game! How about that stat? Thank you Wikipedia.

was the defending national champion, coming off their Sugar Bowl win over Herschel Walker and the Georgia Bulldogs. entered the game as the preseason #1 ranked team in the nation.

The Cornhuskers absolutely steamrolled the Lions on virtually every play. It was complete and utter domination. It made USC vs Ohio State look like a nail-biter.

Jack McCallum of SI wrote a terrific article on this game, which brings back fond memories for this particular Husker fan. That game rocked. Here’s an excerpt of the Jack McCallum article, you can read the whole thing here. Scroll down for the Mike Rozier cover.

This time didn’t take any chances. The last time played —on Sept. 25, 1982—the Cornhuskers blew a three-point lead in the final four seconds and suffered a bitter 27-24 defeat. The Nittany Lions went on to win the national championship. On Monday night, though, in the inaugural Kickoff Classic at Giants Stadium in the New Jersey Meadowlands, gave not the slightest opportunity to stage late-game heroics. Or, for that matter, early or mid-game heroics. Unleashing a formidable offensive attack coolly led by Quarterback Turner Gill , the Huskers rolled up 500 yards on the way to a 44-6 romp that was even more one-sided than the score.

With behind him—far, far behind— Coach noted afterward that a team usually improves the most between its first and second games of the season. Yikes. Heaven help , the next victim on the Huskers’ schedule.

Coach Joe Paterno said he had “grave reservations” about playing a game in August, but he couldn’t have imagined just how grave his plight would be. “Ever get the crap kicked out of you?” he said early Tuesday morning, long after the lights had gone out. No Paterno team had been treated so badly since 1966, his first season as Lion head coach, when UCLA beat 49-11.

stormed to a 21-0 half-time lead, and then Osborne mercifully benched most of his regulars. Trouble was, the Cornhuskers ‘ second, third and fourth units were just as rough on as the starters, and soon the numbers on the board read 44, 0.

Someone help me.

We must find footage of this game

and post it on YouTube before sundown.

Warning: HG will venture off to non-Husker universe from time-to-time, but only when it’s worth it.

Some of you may remember the former football power known as . In fact, ’s and ’s paths and fates have crossed each other quite a few times: that robbed of a win (see video), 1994 National Championship dispute, and the 2002 Jimmy-Kick Game in State College.

But lately, both teams have fell on hard times. With , the brand got slightly diminished under Solich and Callahan took a 4-year crap on whatever was left of that brand.

The Good News: In Bo We Trust!

With , a stubborn old warrior won’t let go of the reigns of the proud program he built. To give you an idea how old JoePa is, just imagine still coaching the Cornhuskers…in the year 2019!

That’s where JoePa’s at. He is in 2019. I kid you not.

Anyway, along with JoePa’s age, another major point of contention is , the son of the old warrior. is the quarterbacks coach for and word on the street is, with ample evidence to back up these claims, is that he can’t coach or recruit anyone. is losing their territory to Pitt, Ohio State, Rutgers, and West Virginia. Not good.

So when came out and endorsed , it made some ripples considering Joe Paterno’s strong ties to the republican party. Some even took it as a cynical way to better connect with recruits.

Either way, Jay Paterno has taken to blogging for Obama and so far, the results have not been pretty. The venom is not necessarily spewed towards Obama, but the idea that an incompetent coach is blogging for Obama.

(Example of incompetent coach? says that finished #1 in the only two offensive stats that matter: Key situations of Red Zone and Third Downs.’ Also, he posted at 10:02 AM, during work hours.)

Translation: Just imagine if Kevin Cosgrove started working the phone bank for Mitt Romney last year at 10am on Monday.

Here is a sampling of the comments:

“Coach” Paterno,

Thanks for giving the rest of us a bye week throughout the season. It really helps us rest a few guys.

Signed,
Big Ten Defenses

And Jay you should be worrying about the offense of a college football team that has a LOT of questions, not blogging about Obama.

Sure I’m a knife wielding republican, but why didn’t you just throw me the ball a little more last year Jay?

Yikes!

HG firmly believes swimming in political waters is a risky proposition for any public figure.

That being said, when people start questioning your capacity and competence of your job, it makes swimming in those waters a little more treacherous.
