Husker Nation newspaper columnists talk about moving to 8-4
Filed Under 2008 Opponents, Colorado | Leave a Comment
Terry Douglass from The Grand Island Independent:
“While it was just one game and Henry’s (sic) heroics didn’t help produce any kind of championship hardware, the difference between being 8-4 and riding the momentum of a three-game winning streak to a bowl game and taking a 7-5 record into the postseason is much, much more than just one game.”
Samuel McKewon of the Nebraska State Paper:
“Any casual college football lover who tuned in to see if Nebraska was “back with Bo” saw the ghosts of Bill Callahan: Bizarre, inexplicable defensive busts. The perfectly ill-timed trick play on special teams. The bewildering habit of taking the hot running back out of the game right when he’s needed most. The inexcusable sack.
Yep, the sirens were ready to whoop whoop whoop from Omaha to Scottsbluff.
But you already know the best antidote for criticism: A miracle.
Hello, Alex Henery, the kid who laced a 57-yard field goal and saved NU from a weekend-long riot act. Call it the Kick Heard Round Nebraska. There’s never been one bigger – and there may never be one longer – than that one.”

Bo Pelini puts his stamp on this season
Filed Under Big 12, Bo Pelini, Kansas | Leave a Comment
The victory over the Kansas Jayhawks, the same Kansas that embarrassed and destroyed Nebraska 76-39 last year, represents tangible progress and makes this season a undeniable success. It’s also the greatest triumph of Bo Pelini’s short tenure.
On top of that, the Huskers are progressing throughout the season and developing younger players. This bodes well for not only for the rest of the season, but 2009.
Because of Bo delivering the Huskers a bowl game, the Huskers will get an extra 15 practices, a game against a quality opponent, and a real chance to finish the season in the top 25 and start 2009 in the Top 25.
If you can’t get excited about that, then HG can’t help you.
We are all disappointed that the Huskers couldn’t pull out a victory against Texas Tech and Virginia Tech. We were all questioning the coaching staff after Oklahoma and Missouri, but after beating Kansas, the Huskers are poised to finish 2nd in the Big 12 North.
We came into Kansas as underdogs and some of us were expecting the worse. What we got was a team that in 7 days absorbed a soul-crushing loss at the hands of the Sooners and defeated a competitive Kansas team.
A tip of the hat goes to the players and the coaching staff for keeping the team focused on finishing the season strong.
Restoring the Order has taken a step forward.

Outside the Heartland - Jay Paterno Gets Barocked Blogging for Obama
Filed Under Bo Pelini, Classic Videos, Huskers, Tom Osborne, Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
Warning: HG will venture off to non-Husker universe from time-to-time, but only when it’s worth it.
Some of you may remember the former football power known as Penn State. In fact, Nebraska’s and Penn State’s paths and fates have crossed each other quite a few times: 1982 Blown Call in Happy Valley that robbed Nebraska of a win (see video), 1994 National Championship dispute, and the 2002 Jimmy-Kick Game in State College.
But lately, both teams have fell on hard times. With Nebraska, the brand got slightly diminished under Solich and Callahan took a 4-year crap on whatever was left of that brand.
The Good News: In Bo We Trust!
With Penn State, a stubborn old warrior won’t let go of the reigns of the proud program he built. To give you an idea how old JoePa is, just imagine Tom Osborne still coaching the Nebraska Cornhuskers…in the year 2019!
That’s where JoePa’s at. He is Tom Osborne in 2019. I kid you not.
Anyway, along with JoePa’s age, another major point of contention is Jay Paterno, the son of the old warrior. Jay Paterno is the quarterbacks coach for Penn State and word on the street is, with ample evidence to back up these claims, is that he can’t coach or recruit anyone. Penn State is losing their territory to Pitt, Ohio State, Rutgers, and West Virginia. Not good.
So when Jay Paterno came out and endorsed Barack Obama, it made some ripples considering Joe Paterno’s strong ties to the republican party. Some even took it as a cynical way to better connect with recruits.
Either way, Jay Paterno has taken to blogging for Obama and so far, the results have not been pretty. The venom is not necessarily spewed towards Obama, but the idea that an incompetent coach is blogging for Obama.
(Example of incompetent coach? Jay Paterno says that Penn State finished #1 in the only two offensive stats that matter: Key situations of Red Zone and Third Downs.’ Also, he posted at 10:02 AM, during work hours.)
Nebraska Translation: Just imagine if Kevin Cosgrove started working the phone bank for Mitt Romney last year at 10am on Monday.
Here is a sampling of the comments:
“Coach” Paterno,
Thanks for giving the rest of us a bye week throughout the season. It really helps us rest a few guys.
Signed,
Big Ten DefensesAnd Jay you should be worrying about the offense of a college football team that has a LOT of questions, not blogging about Obama.
Sure I’m a knife wielding republican, but why didn’t you just throw me the ball a little more last year Jay?
Yikes!
HG firmly believes swimming in political waters is a risky proposition for any public figure.
That being said, when people start questioning your capacity and competence of your job, it makes swimming in those waters a little more treacherous.
