Three former Nebraska Huskers—center Cam Jurgens, offensive lineman Nick Gates, and linebacker Ochaun Mathis—are now Super Bowl champions following the Philadelphia Eagles’ dominant victory in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday. This marks the second time in five years that Nebraska has had three alumni on a Super Bowl-winning roster, echoing the 2020 season when three former Husker defenders claimed rings with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Cam Jurgens: Anchoring the Eagles’ Offensive Line
Cam Jurgens stood out as the starting center for an Eagles offensive line widely regarded as the NFL’s best. In Super Bowl LIX, Jurgens anchored an offense that controlled possession for nearly 37 minutes and racked up 345 total yards in a decisive 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The Eagles’ 40-point performance was their highest in a Super Bowl since scoring 41 in their Super Bowl LII triumph after the 2017 season.
Jurgens’ remarkable first season as a starter was capped by a Pro Bowl selection. The Beatrice, Nebraska native played a key role in Philadelphia’s offense, which ranked second in the NFL in rushing during the regular season. A former tight end turned center at Nebraska, Jurgens started 31 of 32 games for the Huskers from 2019 to 2021, earning All-Big Ten honors in his final season before being drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Eagles.
Nick Gates and Ochaun Mathis: Adding to the Championship Legacy
Nick Gates and Ochaun Mathis also claimed their first Super Bowl rings as members of the Eagles. Gates, a seven-year NFL veteran, joined Philadelphia in 2024 after stints with the New York Giants and Washington. He appeared in nine games, including one start, before being placed on injured reserve prior to the Super Bowl. Gates wrapped up his Nebraska career in 2017 and has been a mainstay in the NFC East ever since.
Ochaun Mathis, who played one season for Nebraska in 2022, joined the Eagles during the 2024 campaign. Splitting time between the practice squad and the active roster, Mathis made appearances in three games, contributing to the team’s depth throughout the season.
With their Super Bowl LIX victory, Jurgens, Gates, and Mathis have etched their names into both Nebraska and NFL history, further solidifying the Huskers’ tradition of producing championship-caliber talent.
